Our Mission & Values

Our mission is to create a future without breast cancer by making 1 in 10, none in 10.

Breast cancer is one of the most devastating health problems of our time and we believe that: Prevention is better than healing because it saves the labour of being sick - Thomas Adams, 17th Century Physician.

Our purpose built breast cancer prevention centre, Europe's first, was completed in 2007 and we aim to support its services by sponsoring people and science.

We will achieve this by providing a strategic programme of clinical research, the UK's largest family history clinic, plus a training centre for specialists in all breast cancer disciplines.

We will promote breast screening and early diagnosis, and research new treatments to stop breast cancer in its early stages.

Differences in breast cancer statistics

Right across Europe 1 in 10 women will develop breast cancer at some time during their life. Here in the UK the charity Cancer Research UK has estimated that the risk may now be as high as 1 in 8 women. Our own expert, Professor Gareth Evans advises that the true rate in the UK is still actually around 1 in 10. Professor Evans’ reasons for this are:-

• The 1 in 8 rate only applies to women who live beyond 85 years of age
• It includes women who have only had pre-cancer changes
• It may double count some women who have had breast cancer twice.

Whichever statistic you take, the aim of The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal is to turn things around until we see the rate fall to 1 in 11, then 1 in 12 and so on. Our ultimate goal is to stop the disease and make breast cancer preventable for everyone.
