Jennifer Saunders’ Secret Breast Cancer Battle

July 8, 2010 – 12:18 pm by hpercy

201w3108t23It emerged last night that another one of our much loved stars has been battling breast cancer. Jennifer Saunders revealed that after finding a lump in her breast, she had the tumour removed then underwent a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. After being given the all clear she was seen celebrating at Wimbledon.

Statistics show that 1 in 10 women will contract breast cancer at some point in their lives. It is no surprise that so many famous ladies such as, Kylie Minogue, Sally Whitaker (now Sally Dynevor), Sheryl Crow, Cynthia Nixon etc, are appearing in the news with their own battles.

It reiterates the importance of breast cancer awareness. The Genesis Appeal is the only UK charity dedicated to research into the prevention of breast cancer to make 1 in 10 none in 10.

The stars of Corrie turned out to show their support and raise awareness of breast cancer, and Jack P Shepherd even pulled on his Genesis Pink Tutu for the night.

The final amount raised by party organisers Linda Kelly and Jenny Cookson at Granada TV was £31, 360.000!!!!

Thank you to Linda and Jenny and everyone who was there on the night, your support has been amazing!!

Good Luck Sally

May 18, 2010 – 1:33 pm by hpercy

We’ve known Sally for quite a while due to her long-standing support for The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal. Sally worked closely with us in the latter part of last year, as her character in Coronation Street was diagnosed and subsequently treated for breast cancer. She took on the task of portraying a woman affected by this disease with great dedication and commitment – determined to do the storyline justice.
Sally at Keep Fit and Pink Walk
It was with great irony that she decided to have a breast check-up herself, only to discover that she had a lump and after having test, finding it was breast cancer.

It has been with the same dedication and commitment that Sally has faced this situation – she has been incredibly brave and remained positive. We’re thrilled that Sally is well on the road to recovery, and is now promoting with renewed determination the importance of early diagnosis and prevention.

Currently one in ten women in the UK will develop breast cancer. We see hundreds of women just like Sally being diagnosed with breast cancer every week. Although women of any age can be affected by the disease, factors such as diet and lifestyle can have a great impact on lowering a woman’s breast cancer risk. The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal is the UK’s only charity entirely dedicated to the prevention of the disease. We believe that the best way to beat breast cancer is by early diagnosis and prevention. For that reason we are promoting research into the faulty genes and the environmental factors that can trigger the disease, as well as better methods of screening and early diagnosis.

On behalf of The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal, we would like to wish Sally the best of luck with her recovery, and hope to see her back on our screens soon.

To support breast cancer prevention, sign up to The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal ‘Keep Fit & Pink’ Day 2010.  Join a host of Coronation Street Stars, on 6 June in Manchester from 1pm, and walk for breast cancer. The event promises to be a fantastic day for everyone and is open to people of all ages. Registration costs £12 for adults and £8 for children over five. To register, please visit www.genesisuk.org or email info@genesisuk.org.  You can also call The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal’s office on 0161 291 4400 or just turn up and join in with all the fun on the day!

Keep Fit & Pink Day, Walk for Cancer

April 26, 2010 – 2:31 pm by admin

It’s almost that time of the year again when The Genesis Appeal host their very own walk for cancer as part of their ‘Keep Fit & Pink Day’. The idea behind this breast cancer fundraising event came to fruition due to the links between high fat, high calorie diets and breast cancer prevalent in Western diets.

There is valid evidence that indicates that physical activity can help to reduce the risk of breast cancer. The first fundraising event took place in 2007 and has been a recurring annual event ever since. Our Keep Fit & Pink Day consists of a 10km walk, fitness challenges and live music.

The whole family can take part in the walk for cancer so come and show your support on Sunday, 6th June 2010 for breast cancer prevention.

Love,

The Genesis Team
