Women in Greater Manchester are being recruited to take part in a study to predict breast cancer risk. The research project launches officially on October 14, 2009.

Researchers from the Genesis Prevention Centre, based at UHSM's Wythenshawe Hospital, are asking for a small number of women to come forward to become case studies for media purposes.

They need to be between 47 and 60 years-old and have already received a letter inviting them for their routine NHS breast screening mammogram, which will need to take place in the next three weeks.

The chosen candidates must:

1. Feel comfortable being interviewed on and off camera.
2. Live in Manchester (Didsbury, Withington, Chorlton and Fallowfield areas are particularly targeted as the study is being conducted at Withington Community Hospital).
3. Sign a strict confidentiality agreement until the study has been officially launched.
4. Be available now.

Dr Chris Steele, a keen supporter of Genesis and resident doctor on ITV's This Morning and a GP from Didsbury, said:

"We hope the results of this research will ensure that women know the factors that put them at increased risk of breast cancer. Knowing the risks increases your awareness of breast cancer, and awareness increases the chance of early diagnosis ... and early diagnosis means better success rates, meaning more lives saved."

The Genesis Appeal, the UK's only charity entirely dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer, has helped fund the study alongside the National Institute for Health Research.
