The effects of intermittent and continuous low calorie diets on markers of breast cancer risk.

Heavier women are at greater risk of developing breast cancer. Weight loss is likely to reduce the risk of heavier women, but the optimum weight reducing diet to reduce cancer risk is not yet known.

This study is testing whether strict calorie restriction for just 2 days/week has a better effect on:

  • Weight loss
  • Hormone levels
  • Cancer causing substances

It will also test if this type of diet is easier to follow than a moderate calorie restriction over every day of the week.

This study will tell the best ways to lose weight to reduce breast cancer risk. We have recruited 108 women to particpate and the results are expected by November 2007.
