Professor Tony Howell Cancer Prevention Strategies
Tony Howell is a Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Manchester and has undertaken pioneering research into breast cancer prevention for the last 20 years. His major interests are in the endocrine therapy of breast cancer, prevention of breast cancer and breast stem cell biology. He is Chairman of several international breast trials and is the former Chairman of the UK National Breast Trials organisation and the British Breast Group. Tony enjoys lecturing internationally and has written over 400 papers, mainly related to breast biology and breast disease.
Tony is also Chief Investigator of the IBIS-II Prevention Study, which will determine if a breast cancer treatment called anastrozole can help prevent breast cancer in women at high risk of the disease. For more information about this study visit www.ibis-trials.org.
 Professor Gareth Evans Cancer Genes
Gareth Evans is an international authority on cancer genetics, and is chairman of the NICE familial breast cancer group. A consultant in medical genetics at St Mary's Hospital and Christie Hospital in Manchester, he is also Chairman of the Cancer Genetics Group and Council Member of the British Society of Human Genetics. Gareth's research specialisms are genetic predisposition to breast cancer and type 2 neurofibromatosis. The focus of his research is currently moving away from clinical pattern recognition and gene identification, towards cancer prevention. He has published over 300 research papers. Gareth is also committed to the charitable work of the Neurofibromatosis Association, having chaired their Advisory Boards for years. Professor Nigel Bundred Pre-Cancer Changes
Nigel Bundred is a Professor in Surgical Oncology and a Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Surgery at the University Hospital of South Manchester and Christie Hospital. He is one of the world's leading experts in preinvasive cancer (ductal carcinoma in situ), breast cancer chemoprevention and bone metastases. He has received numerous honours and awards, including the Patey Prize from the Surgical Research Society and the Ronald Raven Prize from the British Association of Surgical Oncology. Dr Michelle Harvie is a research dietician from South Manchester Hospital Trust. She qualified as a dietician in 1991 and was awarded a PhD for studies of weight gain in cancer patients in 2000. Her current programme of work is researching optimum diet and exercise strategies to prevent breast cancer and its recurrence, through both diet/exercise intervention and epidemiological studies. In 2005 Dr Harvie was awarded the British Dietetic Association Rose Simmond's Award for best-published dietetic research, for her work on weight gain amongst breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. In 2007 Dr Harvie was also awarded the 'Women and Health' award by Manchester City Council, which celebrates the achievements of the city's remarkable women, community groups or organisations that work hard to improve the lives of women in Manchester. Lester Barr is Chairman of The Genesis Appeal and a Consultant Surgeon at the University Hospital of South Manchester and Christie Hospital. His principal areas of specialisation are breast cancer surgery and breast reconstruction. Lester trained at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. |
